So, I know we’re supposed to appreciate the fine craft of filmmaking during TIFF, but let’s get real for a minute. Watching movies is my preferred activity in life but for most of us, the film fest is an excuse to stargaze in a way that we all claim is below us. Well, it’s certainly not below me, so it is with great pleasure that I confirm the attendance of pretty much every Hollywood star you can think of and more at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF has announced the full line up of their Mavericks program, which gives cinema-goers the opportunity to hear notable guests share experiences and anecdotes from the world of filmmaking and beyond. TIFF ’10: Contemporary World Cinema program
Another hour, another TIFF 2010 programming announcement. With the event only two short weeks away, it’s time to get down to business and wade your way into the vast number of film programs on offer. The latest announcement is for this year’s Contemporary World Cinema program, which consists of 45 film premieres from all around the world, and includes directors Tom Tykwer, Tsui Hark, Marion Hansel, Feng Xiaogang, Hong Sangsoo, Ann Hui, Gabriel Range and Khalo Matabane. Top Canadian Picks at TIFF 2010
TIFF’s Canadian film offerings are always plentiful and varied. It only makes sense that the country’s largest festival should focus a significant percentage of its programming on local talent. This year’s crop features a healthy mix of new and veteran filmmakers. Some of the country’s most established directors (Cronenberg, Egoyan, Maddin) don’t have new films to showcase, though Atom Egoyan will be premiering a commissioned work at TIFF Bell Lightbox as part of the Essential Cinema exhibits a bit later this fall. TIFF ’10: Spotlight on Istanbul
For the second year in a row, TIFF gives audiences a closer perspective at another city around the world by showcasing films from or about that city. The 2009 City to City programme spotlighted Tel Aviv. This year, we have the chance to explore culturally rich films created by both emerging and seasoned filmmakers from Istanbul, Turkey. This vibrant, historic city has been slowly making its way into other film festivals around the world, and TIFF has taken notice. The City to City programme showcases 7 shorts and 10 feature length films all centering around the cultural, social and political events of Istanbul. Of these 17 films, 6 are North American premieres, 3 International premieres, 3 World premieres, 2 Canadian premieres, and one Toronto premiere. Read more
TIFF ’10: New Galas and Special Presentations
With just under three weeks to go, it’s almost time to start drafting your personal schedule for the Toronto International Film Festival.
